1) If you are a citizen of a different country, in order to enter the United States you must enter with a valid visa. This visa for students who wish to study in the United States can be on a F-1 Visa or a M-1 Visa.
2) A F-1 visa requires that you enter the United States to study and attend a university or a college, a high school, a private elementary school, seminary, conservatory, an academic institution, which may include a language-training program. If you are visiting on a M-1 visa, you have to enter the United States to attend a vocation or other recognized nonacademic institution.
3) The visa waiver program does not extend to students. Students cannot travel on a B visa unless it is a recreational study as part of a tourist visit. Other than this, students must travel on a F-1 or a M-1.
4) The process to apply for a student visa starts at the United States Embassy or Consulate in the country that the student intending to start the visa process lives in. A DS-160 form, fee and photographs are required as well as a certificate of eligibility for non-immigrant F-1 student status, for academic students – form I-20A-B, or certificate of eligibility for non-immigrant M-1 student status for vocational students – form I-20M-N.
5) There maybe other documentation required such as transcripts, diplomas, degrees of all the schools you’ve previously attended, any standardized test scores required by the U.S. School you will attend, your clear intent to depart the United States upon completion of your course of study, and how you
intent to pay all your educational and living costs while you are in the United States.
